This paper assesses the effectiveness of an original ceramic workshop for conducting research consultation with science and engineering students at undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. Three practical exercises using clay were designed to enhance development, visualisation and communication of personal research projects through art-design methodologies. Participant observation, text analysis and questionnaire surveys confirmed the usefulness of the workshop and the appreciation of the students. Communication was facilitated by hands-on activities, the versatility of clay as a medium of expression, focused and continued reflection, guidance from the teacher and direct comparison with other students’ responses.
