Considering the military aggression against Ukraine and the assistance of neighboring states, such monitoring of statistical data is useful and can serve as a basis for further forecasts regarding the development of the higher education system in Europe. Although in the modern conditions of the multi-system crisis in Ukraine, any forecasting is a rather difficult. The main trends regarding the number of higher education institutions, the number of students and teachers, as the basic factors determining the effectiveness of the functioning of the higher education system in Ukraine and Poland, have been determined. The budget expenditures and the effectiveness of the functioning of the education sector were analyzed. The following trends were identified in 2020-2021 according to the taps: Poland – increase in the number of students and funding, although not at such a high rate; stable number of personnel. Ukraine – reducing the number of students, employees and funding. The indicated trends and differences are due to economic, socio-demographic factors in each country.
