It is characterized by the benign growth of melanocytes in the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. When the lesion covers a larger area of the body, exceeding 20 cm, it is referred to as a giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN). The occurrence of this condition is rare, affecting approximately 1 in every 200,000 to 500,000 births. There is a lifetime risk of 5%–40% for the development of malignant melanoma from the nevus. Early detection of the lesion and regular monitoring are crucial in order to identify any malignant changes.
