Tandem Nursing: A Review

Tandem nursing is a nursing (Breastfeeding) for two or more children of different ages at the same time. Breastfeeding during a subsequent pregnancy is not unusual. If the pregnancy is normal and the mother is healthy, breastfeeding during pregnancy is the woman’s personal decision. While breastfeeding during pregnancy is not considered tandem nursing, it is often a precursor to it. When pregnancy progress, the breast milk changes. Allow the newborn to feed first during the colostrum phase when breastfeeding the two different age babies. Colostrum is safe for toddlers. Colostrum contains immune boost substances because of that the toddler gets immunity. Pregnancy hormones are also present in breast milk but they won’t harm the baby. Breast milk secretes enough milk to both children. Avoid tandem feeding in case, if pregnancy is high risk or any risk of miscarriage, risk of preterm labour, Twins or multiples, Presence of uterine pain and bleeding.
