Improving learning on economic analysis of energy efficiency projects by using comparative cost analysis and measuring and verification methodology
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Savings-based Projects (ESPs) rely on capital investment and must compete with other capital expenditure projects inside organizations. The education on the economic feasibility analysis of these ESPs must be improved in order to be more attractive for investments. This paper discusses the redesign of an online graduate course using project oriented learning as a teaching technique and performance assessment to evaluate students on a competency-based educational model using real life scenarios of ESPs. The redesign of the course considers financial analysis tools such as comparative annual cost analysis, which requires a detailed analysis on the actual energy consumption and an estimation of the energy consumption for the improved scenario, and a proper selection of a reliable energy measurement and identification methodology It has been found that the redesigned course allowed the students to better develop their competences on the financial analysis and further promotion of ESPs.
