Bureaucrat’s Disposition towards Decision Making in Organization : Tribulations and Prognosis
Bureaucratic organization is increasingly dominating the institutional landscape, departments of state, political parties, business enterprises, the military, education and churches are all organized on bureaucratic lines. Managers’ unsystematic and irrational approaches to work create very serious problems between management and employees. Consequently, there is bound to be dysfunctional behaviors and stress set in, thus endangers the growth of such organization. This shows that the organization is having problem with its human organization. The beliefs, values, attitudes, and practices of the members of an organization—is a powerful force in determining the health and well-being of an organization. Decision making is the process of narrowing alternative in order to choose the best course of action. It deals with deciding and doing. It is an important factor that influences the quality of an organization. This study is an attempt to examine the nature of decision making in organization. It is also aimed at unraveling the factors influencing decision making, as well as proffer solutions to the tribulations. Relying on secondary sources, much of the data was accessed through the review of the extant literature and goggle scholars, while Participatory management theory was used as theoretical framework to anchor the paper for more objective insight. Findings show that strict enforcement of bureaucratic procedures, in some contexts, may not fetch the desired results. The culture of uncertainty avoidance tendency negatively affects the achievement of the targeted results of an organization. It bars officials from taking initiatives of innovation. Therefore, this paper called for a paradigm shift from personalization of decision to participative decision making. Therefore, officials need to apply their discretion and take some risks to ensure some positive effect in the organization.
