The automated plug-in unit for insulator replacement (APUIR) employs robotized plug-in sub-assemblies to replace defective insulators and perform other tasks. The APUIR, which is mounted on an insulated lifting arm and is operated by a computer or an operator at ground level, is placed on an insulator string to release the tension of the string and to remove and install insulator units.
