The temperature dependence of space charge accumulation and DC current in XLPE power cable insulation
A cylindrical XLPE power cable sample with 6 mm thick XLPE insulation was heated in stages from 30/spl deg/C to 90/spl deg/C with 50 kV DC applied. At each temperature the current through the XLPE and the accumulation of space charge within it were recorded over several hours. The equilibrium space charge and current densities increased rapidly with increasing temperature. Electron injection/extraction at the electrodes and a spatially-inhomogeneous distribution of permanent dipolar molecules in the XLPE bulk are indicated.
