The nature of the profession of a soldier, serving in any rank corps, places high demands on each individual. The general requirements for personal qualities, abilities and skills for service in the modern armed forces are similar in all armies of democratic countries and undergo approximately the same development. Efforts to educate and develop future military officers aim to produce highly competent, ethical and effective leaders who will serve the nation. But while there is general agreement about the desired outcomes, the underlying developmental processes associated with those outcomes are not well understood. The current and future needs of the military profession require a level of personal maturity.
