Work has been initiated within the American National Standards Committee X3T9.5 committee that developed the standards for the fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) on a new generation local area network. This network is targeted for operation at rates greater than 1 Gb/s. This follow-on work to FDDI is at an early stage. The current requirements for an FDDI follow-on network are presented, the issues affecting those requirements are discussed, and plans for future work are given.<>
