A Two-Dimensional Beam Scanning Antenna Array Using Composite Right/Left Handed Microstrip Leaky-Wave Antennas
In this work, we demonstrated a novel 2-dimensional beam scanning antenna array at a fixed frequency. For a beam scanning in E-plane, a microstrip leaky wave antenna based on a composite right/left handed transmission line structure loading voltage-controlled tuning elements was designed. Measured results show a wide scanning range from -39deg to +60deg at 8.5 GHz. Also a Rotman lens was designed to give additional beam scanning capability in orthogonal direction. Combining these two 1-dimensional scanning methods, a 2-dimensional beam scanning antenna array was implemented on a single substrate in a planar form. Measured results show wide scanning ranges from -33deg to 45deg and -15deg to 15deg in E-plane and H-plane, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of 2-dimensional beam scanning array using leaky wave antennas at a fixed frequency.
