A novel magnetic-circuit based design approach for electric vehicle motors
In this paper, a new methodology for designing an electrical machine is proposed. Preliminary physical dimensions for the machine to be designed are obtained with the use of analytical equations. Then, the machine is realized by a Magnetic Equivalent Circuit (MEC) for accurate analysis. Thus, with the aid of MEC, quick convergence to the optimal machine design on different fronts like losses, cost, weight, etc. becomes feasible. Such design procedures are preferred in electric vehicle applications. The MEC topology considered in this work accounts for the saturation of the core material and the movement of rotor. As a result, the solutions obtained would be accurate. Further, with the aid of finite element analysis tool, the machine design can be validated. The proposed methodology is demonstrated for the design of switched reluctance motor.
