: The efficient use of natural resources and the process of transition to a circular economy are becoming increasingly important on the international political agenda after the global financial crisis of 2007–2008. The study analyses recent trends in resource productivity and material use and outlines the outlook for 2060, briefly presenting the key elements of environmental co-operation between groups of countries that play a key role in the world economy. Between 2004 and 2017, resource productivity increased more or less in all G20 countries except Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil. The G7 countries have achieved absolute decoupling, while the BRIICS group of countries has separated domestic material consumption from gross domestic product (relative decoupling). There is a significant geographical shift in the global use of resources, so the intention to improve resource efficiency will further necessitate closer co-operation between multilateral institutions (UN, OECD, etc.) and political groupings (G20, G7, BRIICS).
