Design of LAN/WAN relay systems in the European context
The problem of local-area-network/wide-area-network (LAN/WAN) interworking, where the WAN part is supported by an X.25 packet switched data network, is addressed. In this situation, a solution consists of extending the support of the connection-oriented characteristics to the LAN part of the communication. This can be achieved by implementing the X.25 level-3 protocol on the LAN stations. Interconnection between LAN and WAN can be realized by gateways supporting the X.25/PLP on both sides. The structure of such a gateway is discussed, focusing on the protocol, relaying, and routing aspects. It is required that this solution guarantee a negligible rate of generated resets and disconnects to allow for the operation of the transport protocol classes 0 or 2.<>
