SERENE: An Online Support System for Depression
The World Mental Health 2012 investigation in 17 nations found that around 1 out of 20 individuals detailed having a scene of depression in the earlier year. A recent World Health Assembly called on the World Health Organization (WHO) and its members to take action with the mental health action plan 2013–2020. The action plan looked into four objectives: (1) strengthen effective leadership and governance for mental health; (2) provide comprehensive, integrated and responsive mental health and social care services in community-based settings; (3) implement strategies for promotion and prevention in mental health; (4) strengthen information systems, evidence and research for mental health. The proponents looked into a social media model using technology as a solution to address objective 2 and 3 of WHO called SERENE. The study using needs analysis interview with experts in the field of psychology, implemented a website that allows posting your feelings anonymously, watching learning videos on depression, and have counseling via chat with a licensed psychologist along with information assessment about different types of depression. Finally, the system was tested using test script to random users in four categories: Engagement, Aesthetic, Functionality, and Information. The result of the test was generally Excellent.
