Features of the Current Socioeconomic Crisis in Lebanon
The author of the article attempts to investigate various aspects of the current socio-economic and monetary-financial crisis in Lebanon, while analyzing the main external and internal factors that have contributed to the exacerbation of many problems the country is currently facing over the past two decades. One of the most important reasons for the significant deterioration of the macroeconomic and social situation in the 2010s is associated with the intensification in political tensions both within the country and in the Middle East region, in particular, with the Syrian military conflict that began in March 2011. The socio-economic problems erupted in the late 2010s into massive protests by the Lebanese population across the country. Given numerous complex challenges facing Lebanon today, the latest crisis, as can be expected, hit hard on the country’s highly volatile economy.
