Liquid phase sintering of Pb(Mg/sub 1/3/Nb/sub 2/3/)/sub 1-x/Zr/sub x/O/sub 3/ ceramics (PMN/sub 1-x/PZ/sub x/) was carried out via the fluxing agents of Bi/sub 2/O/sub 3/Li/sub 2/O and PbO. The sintering temperature of PMN/sub 1-x/PZ/sub x/ could be lowered from 1300 degrees C to less than 1000 degrees C. Besides acting as a liquid-phase fluxing agent, both Bi/sub 2/O/sub 3//Li/sub 2/O and PbO behave as a Curie shifter and depressor. Bi/sub 2/O/sub 3//Li/sub 2/O decreases the Curie temperature of PMN/sub 1-x/PZ/sub x/, while PbO shifts the Curie temperature in an upward manner. The relaxation characteristics of PMN/sub 1-x/PZ/sub x/ were enhanced with the incorporation of Bi/sub 2/O/sub 3//Li/sub 2/O. PbO cannot relax and therefore can only slightly broaden the dielectric maximum region of PMN/sub 1-x/PZ/sub x/. The effects of Bi/sub 2/O/sub 3//Li/sub 2/O and PbO on the dielectric properties of PMN/sub 1-x/PZ/sub x/ were also investigated.<>
