Determinants of the Living Arrangements among the Rural Muslim Elderly
India like a developing country is the home for the fastest growing population of her aged people. One of the fundamental issues of population ageing is the living arrangement of the elderly because the societal values declined due to the impact of urbanisation and industrialisation. People like the Muslim's elderly is the more vulnerable group for lack of literacy, economic dependency, structure of household and so on and the vulnerability is more prone for those who are living in rural areas. There are more studies documenting the living arrangement of elderly except Muslims. Therefore, keeping these backdrops in mind, the present study attempts to explore the present nature of living arrangement and its determinants of the 133 elderly Muslim people from both sexes living in the villages. This research work analyses the socio-economic, demographic, household characteristics to determine their living arrangement. The study revealed that majority (90%) of them were living with their spouse and surviving sons and only 05.26% were living alone. In view of the changing socio-economic and demographic condition there is a higher proportion of the elderly living alone in the future.
