Performance Comparison of MPC and PID in CSTR Process Control
This paper considers comparison between the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) and the Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms to control the temperature in a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR). The study was carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. A linear model of CSTR was incorporated with the MPC control law to derive the process outputs to follow the pre-specified reference trajectories. The performance of MPC and PID was evaluated in the sense of time domain characteristics in that the assessment was measured with the performance index of the Integral Squares Errors (ISE).
