Nowadays, conventional homes can be converted into smart homes and easily connected to the smart grid. In this paper, an AC–DC combined power distribution socket and a smart control system are proposed to manage the electrical appliances in a conventional home. The proposed smart socket can measure the electrical parameters of voltage, current, and power consumption. The measured data can be transferred instantly to the internet of things (IoT) cloud server, ThingSpeak. The transmitted data can be monitored and controlled by an android app at the user end. In addition, to introduce smart and interactive control of the home appliances connecting user preference and room environment, sensors are interfaced in the proposed system to analyze environmental status: light intensity, temperature, humidity and presence of a human.
