The present work consists of a bibliographical research, of qualitative approach and exploratory character. Collections were made in the digital databases and the selected scientific materials were articles and monographs, which had a temporal cut from 2011 to 2014. What was found in scientific materials does not focus on the teaching practice itself, but physical activities, the workshops and projects that these professionals develop within these environments, making it clear that physical education is seen as a non-formal educational activity within the schools in the jail, which diminishes its importance as a formal educational activity. It was understood that physical education in the context of prison education is seen as a process of education in health and leisure, through formal and non-formal ways, as it promotes effective health education and a healthy occupation of free time in prison.
