Simplified negative load-based approach versus full HVDC modeling in assessing the HVDC options for the Cape network
When planning HVDC connection into an area, many possible receiving end point could be available. To analyze all of them can be laborious and time-consuming. On the other hand, questions may arise as to why some were not considered, thus threatening the validity of the studies. In this paper, preliminary work on comparing loadflow studies to assess receiving end points is presented. Loadflow studies carried at various load levels are compared for a case of using negative load representations of HVDC with a case where a full HVDC model is implemented. Results show good agreement between the voltages obtained at various load levels, meaning that a simple negative load model representation of HVDC has a potential for use in a justifiable, preliminary screening various possible receiving end points in a transparent way.
