A RELAÇÃO DOS EFEITOS PERCEPTIVOS DA CORRUPÇÃO: UM EXAME EMPÍRICO DO BRASIL
The conceptual model proposed paper examines individual perceptions of the effects of corruption within the public apparatus, in terms of image and of quality. The objective is therefore to contribute empirical evidence on the relationship between corruption in the country’s public institutions and its effects on the image and perceived quality. The conceptual model is tested in a multivariate analysis of data from 626 respondents. As was expected, corruption is not supported by customary law, but is revealed as a perverse activity that does not have positive effects for the country, damaging its reputation and competence and, primarily, leading to loss of confidence in democracy, disdain for politics, and suspicion of public institutions. The analysis also suggests that because of the complexity of corruption, that institutional image and quality are best understood through interaction with corruption as a moderating variable. The results reveal a negative effect on democratic legitimacy.
