Video characteristics of mobile videos on Android devices: Initial results
In this paper, we describe an Android-based video parser application that analyzes video characteristics, frame sizes, and encoding parameters on mobile devices and allows for anonymous submission of the gathered values to our server. Based on several anonymous submissions, we evaluate video sequences that were stored on Android devices with respect to their frame size and frame quantization statistics. We find a broad variation in overall sequence characteristics, which in turn results in large traffic characteristic deviations among sequences, but little intra-sequence variation. We observe little long-range dependency in the submitted sequences' traffic, but high levels for the quantization scale factors of the individual sequences' frames. Furthermore, we find that the evaluated video encodings exhibit characteristics of rate-controlled video encoding.
