A Case of Appendicular Schwannoma with Acute Appendicitis

A 73-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of his lower abdominal pain. Under a diagnosis of acute appendicitis and generalized peritonitis, we attempted the emergency operation. Because operative findings revealed the severe inflammation of the vermiform appendix spreading to the surrounding tissue, appendectomy and abdominal cavity drainage were performed. A definitive diagnosis of acute appendicitis with generalized peritonitis was made on the basis of the surgical and pathological findings. Moreover, a definitive diagnosis of appendicular schwannoma was made by immunohistochemical staining. Postoperative course was uneventful, and he was discharged on postoperative day 12.
