This paper emphasis on the analytical design and sensitivity analysis of a PMSG for a stand-alone direct drive WECS. In the initial part, an analytical calculation was performed in order to determine the design parameters for the surface mounted PMSG. In the second phase, the surface mounted PMSG was designed and analysed through finite element analysis (FEA). Mapping of electrical machine was done using the design specifications from the initial part. Sensitivity analysis was performed to check the machine behaviour at different electrical and mechanical loadings using three different topologies.
