Aiming to help designers to acquire the needed knowledge quickly, this paper develops an ontology-based Knowledge System for Helicopter Transmission Design (KSHTD). To build this system, firstly, based on the Web Ontology Language (OWL), the ontology model of helicopter transmission design is established. Secondly, the rational database is designed according to the terminologies of OWL, which is called ontology database. Thirdly, the ontology model of helicopter transmission design is parsed and imported into the ontology database. Fourthly, the hierarchical structure of KSHTD is proposed based on web Browser/Server (B/S) and function modules, such as knowledge management, knowledge retrieval, model management and user management are implemented.
