Kineettinen äänikirja

Kielen materiaalisuudella – ymmärrettiin se sitten äänen, informaatiovirtojen tai ruumiillisuuden näkökulmasta – on tuottava rooli merkitysten muodostumisessa kielessä. Tämä toimii lähtökohtana tutkimusartikkelissa, jossa käsittelen kääntämistä esityksellisenä strategiana ääni- ja esitystaiteen sekä taiteellisen tutkimuksen kontekstissa. Kuvaan tekijän näkökulmasta virate.me-esitystaideryhmän teosta Manuaali (2021/2022), jossa esiintyjä kytkeytyy sensoritekniikkaan perustuvaan äänijärjestelmään käännösalgoritmin kääntäessä synteettisesti hajotettua puheääntä englanninkieliseksi tekstitykseksi. Yhdessä ruumiilliset ja teknologiset käännösoperaatiot muodostavat esitystapahtumasta taiteellisen koeasetelman, jonka kautta äänikirjan taiteellisia mahdollisuuksia voidaan tarkastella merkityksen tuottamisen materiaalisten ja kineettisten prosessien näkökulmasta. * * * Materiality of language – whether it is understood in the sense of voice, information streams or corporeality – has a productive role in the formation of meanings in language. This is the starting point for a research article where I examine translation as a performative strategy in the context of sound art, live art and artistic research. I depict a performance called Manuaali (2021/2022) by performing arts group virate.me from the author’s perspective. In the performance a human actor is connected to a sound system with sensor feedback mechanism while algorithmic translator translates synthetically dispersed, movement triggered human voice of the narrator into English subtitles. Together these corporeal and technological translation operations turn the performance event into an artistic research experiment through which the artistic potential of audio book formate can be observed from the point of view of the material and kinetic processes of the production of meaning.Keywords: kinetic audiobook, dramaturgy, performance, granular synthesis, algorithmic translation
