Techno-economics of advanced optical subscriber networks
An ad hoc geometrical model has been developed for evaluating the quantities of the components needed in various video communications systems. The impact of key field factors such as subscriber density variation was investigated through practical examples from real operating networks. The overall system costs, including costs of active and passive components as well as electronics and implementation expenditures, were calculated for two single-mode systems: AM with one fiber per subscriber andFM with fiber share. The evaluation was carried out for three user-density configurations corresponding to urban, suburban, and rural zones. The cost analysis was performed for short- and long-term component costs. The overall system cost turns out to be lower for the FM configuration; this is valid for both the short term and the long term.<>
