The prototype transmitter has (1) the ability (radio frequency-enabled ON/OFF) to turn the tag on and off when it passes through a passive integrated transponder antenna and (2) the ability to detect significant salinity changes (i.e., from freshwater to sea water and vice versa) and turn itself off and on, respectively.
