General treatment principles in children with cholestatic liver disease.
In children, most of the cholestatic diseases have unknown etiology and there is no spesific treatment option. In these cases, therapy can only be directed toward supression of the pathogenetic processes and the amelioration of the consequences of cholestasis. By this way quality of life of the children can be promoted until the recovery of the cholestasis or progression of the cholestatic process to liver transplantation requirement on the other extreme treatment modalities in children with cholestatic liver disease analyzed in two groups. Specific treatment of underlining disease is placed in the first group and treatment and prevention of complications secondary to cholestasis itself is in the second group. In this report, general principles of treatment in children with cholestatic liver disease were discussed.
