The paper also attempts to close reading of the discourse of moderate Islam itself in order to raise fundamental questions about what they attempt to do, can do, and cannot be expected to do. The paper takes the position that this institution has significant impact in promoting moderate and tolerant Islam in the country. To address the research questions, we conducted a qualitative study. We employed “ethnographic methods” to explore conceptions and responses of members of this institution in Indonesia with respect to moderate Islam, tolerance, and multiculturalism.
