Peri-Urban Agriculture and Aquaculture, Kolkata: Economic Gains from Waste Recycling

Huge quantities of solid and liquid waste generated by major urban centers have to be effectively managed and disposed. Recycling of these waste in growing food for meeting the urban hunger has been done in various parts of the world. East Kolkata wetlands, have effectively reused both the solid and liquid waste of the metropolis, as a nutrient rich medium for agriculture and aquaculture. This has resulted, on one hand, in the cost effective and sustainable management and disposal of waste, while on the other, has provided job and income opportunity for a large section of poor residents located at the city fringes.
