A hybrid approach to represent and deliver curriculum contents
Proposes a novel way of representing curriculum knowledge. The representation allows greater flexibility in delivering adaptive learning advice in terms of tailor-made study plans. As the notion of Web-based learning keeps marching on triumphantly, more and more teaching/learning materials are accumulating on the servers, but the desperate need for a structured organization of these materials seems to have been overlooked by the community. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a hybrid scheme for representing curriculum knowledge which can cater both for the nominal learning prerequisite links as well as the sub-super inter-nodal relationships in the form of a course hierarchy. Once a course has been represented, different study plans can be generated, and they can be adapted to suit the learning styles of different students. The scheme is based on a combination of standard directed graphs and a modified form of statecharts.
