These novels have allowed me to see a new genre of books that are both enticing as well as something to learn from. One thing that I noticed from all these novels is that the main characters almost always suffered from a form of depression due to having to throw away their own culture to assimilate to the white dominant culture. That's why in this essay I argue the U.S. only allows for those who conform to white standards to triumph in the US.
