In the past three decades, a large number of metrics have been proposed to track software development, to evaluate software quality and to certify software product. Unfortunately, there is still lack of information that can be used to choose the best metrics in a particular-context. In this paper, we review six software metric selection methods based on external measurement that encouraged human judgment as an initial work towards a structure software metric selection model development. This study also outlines the six methods' strengths and weaknesses as well as enables readers to identify appropriate software metrics selection method that is suitable for their requirement.
