Implementing of WDM on Ethernet based-on star topology
The advances in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology have tremendously increased the bandwidth of a single fiber optic, for local and metropolitan area network (LAN and MAN). This paper presents and discusses a new network environment, which combined conventional Ethernet with WDM to decrease the average queuing delay and increase the normalized throughput over different network configuration. The performances of Ethernet/WDM network operating over different number of wavelength channels are evaluated with different network parameters using discrete event simulator called OMNeT++. The study shows that Ethernet/WDM gives a higher normalized throughput and less delay compare to the standard Ethernet network. In this paper also we present the result of performance evaluation of 3 algorithms that combine CSMA/CD and WDM- sort increasing (SI), random select (RS) and no back off (NB) access protocol. Through extensive network-level simulation for a multiple-access WDM/Ethernet, with 3 nodes and 1, 2 and 3 wavelengths on a 100 m fiber optic cable, we have verified that RS and SI show the best performance in term of throughput, while for the delay, NB shows the best performance.
