Lean Manufacturing and Industry 4.0: A Holistic Integration Perspective in the Industrial Context
Focused on value-adding activities, Lean Manufacturing (LM) is already widely known and used in the productive environment. On the other hand, the new technologies from Forth Industrial Revolution are promising trends in industry. This work aimed to study the possibility of integration between the concepts of Industry 4.0 and Lean Manufacturing. After observing and categorizing the principles, attributes, technologies and guiding concepts of LM and Industry 4.0, a relationship matrix was developed by this study, associating each of the five LM principles with the attributes of Industry 4.0. It was identified 22 synergy points, which are also represented in the five proposed diagrams. These diagrams were developed to represent, in a visual way, the relationship of each LM principle and attributes 4.0, approaching organizational challenges, Lean tools, and technologies 4.0. As a result, it was proposed that LM and Industry 4.0 can work together and collaborate mutually from a holistic integration perspective.
