Comparative Assessment of Coated CBN and Multilayer Coated Carbide Tools on Tool Wear in Hard Turning AISID2 Steel
In the present work, the effects of machining factor on tool wear of coated CBN and coated carbide tools during hard turning of AISI D2 steel are evaluated. Cutting speed, machining time and feed rate at three levels were selected as cutting variables. By adopting RSM technique with FCCD and using analysis of variance, the influence of cutting parameters on tool wear was explored. The results showed that the machining time was most significant factor on the tool wear criteria with respective contribution of (60.28) % for coated CBN insert by against a respective contribution of (68.89) % for coated carbide insert followed cutting speed with respective contribution of (30.34) % for coated CBN and (20.08) % for coated carbide inserts respectively. Normally, coated CBN insert had shown the better performance as comparing with coated carbide tools in terms of less tool wear and increased surface finish.
