Information-Centric Networking Challenges and Opportunities in Service Discovery: A Survey
The growth of the Internet has led to the emergence of broadband access technologies, making it easier to consume varied contents (videos, images, audio, etc.). Indeed, since the creation of the Internet architecture, the needs of users have evolved from the mail exchange, file sharing to video streaming, online games, etc. Clearly, users are now much greedier in rich and varied contents with growing size. For this reason, content distribution becomes a hot research topic aiming to ensure content availability, persistence, security, and reliability. In order to overcome the limitations presented by the current Internet architecture, the concept of Information-Centric Networking (I CN) has been proposed. Paradoxically with the concept of host-centric networking, the main idea of the I CN concept is to directly address the content to access it regardless of its location. In this perspective, several studies have been conducted to propose possible implementations of ICNs. In this survey, we present the ICN concept and its key features; we describe the different ICN-based architectures, their assets, and their shortcomings. Finally, we present the challenges and opportunities raised by ICN involved in the service discovery.
