The abundant deposition of ceramic vessels at churches and cemeteries has recently been associated with salt offerings. This was a usual practice during the Old Regime and continued through most of the 20th century. The presence of plates containing salt on the corpses prevented bodies from swelling up. Salt was therefore considered to have properties that enable the banishment of evil spirits. In this paper we deal with this issue, and look at the containers themselves and the symbolism of the palm branch, a motif often depicted on the vessels to accompany the dead in their journey into eternity.
