The Feasibility of Evaluating Critical Thinking Disposition using Features of Essay Reports
Characteristics of essay reports were extracted in order to evaluate student's ability to develop their critical thinking disposition (CTD) during a blended learning course. Participants presented three types of essay reports in response to the assignments given. A number of simple metrics were extracted from these essay reports using lexical analysis. The relationships between these metrics and conventional essay assessments were examined. Also, the relationships between these metrics and factor scores of CTDs were analysed. In the results, it is shown that some of the metrics contributed to the development of CTD, while student's characteristics affected factor scores primarily. The results confirmed the possibility of using metrics of essay report characteristics to estimate scores of CTDs.
