Designing high speed controllers for high speed local area networks
Performance requirements for bridges interconnecting LANs (local area networks) and HSLANs (high-speed LANs) were studied. It turned out that, in many cases, state-of-the-art bridges are much more likely to be the bottleneck than the medium access protocol used in the HSLAN. Thus, speeding up network controllers will be inevitable. This holds even more for the implementation of more complex functions required for gateways and direct interconnection of high-speed devices. Working in parallel will probably be the only solution for speeding up network controllers.<>
