Cable components and basics of operation are reviewed. The focus is on single-conductor cables, but these fundamentals can be applied to multiple-conductor cables as well. Two basic components in a low-voltage cable, the conductor and the electrical insulation (dielectric), are discussed. Different types of conductors and insulation are described. Other components that are added to handle higher electrical stresses as voltage increases are also discussed, to help the engineer specify the type of components required for specific applications.<>
