Two transmission impairments are added to the usual set of routing constraints. They are polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). Through simulation, we find substantial savings in terms of equipment cost, optimizing the placement of wavelength converters and PMD compensators.
