There are many approaches to quality improvement. Examples are: to educate and train people; to use better methods and tools; to design, implement and control the software engineering process; to assess and improve the software process; to implement and manage a quality system; and to evaluate software intermediate and end products. ISO/IEC 9126 which defines software product quality Characteristics has become a popular international standard, but not yet as popular as IS0 9001. JTClISC7IwG6 is working on preparing drafts for a series of international standards on software product evaluation to support ISO/IEC 9126, i.e., a new 9126 series and a 14598 series. Bio Professor Motoei Azuma graduated from Waseda University in 1963, and joined NEC Corporation. He helped establish the NEC Software Product Engineering Laboratory in 1980 as a senior research manager. He joined Waseda University in 1987. There he is currently professor chairman at the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering, School of Science and Engineering, Waseda University. He is a member of IEEE, ACM, IPSJ (Information Processing Society of Japan), JIMA (Japan Indusuial Management Association) and JASMIN (The Japan Society for Management Informatics). He is a Golden Core Member of the IEEE Computer Society. His research fields include software engineering such as software quality management and measurement, requirement analysis, software process support and software engineering tools. Professor Azuma has edited and authored many books and papers. He has been involved in many national and international standardization working groups on software engineering activities.
