In the present work, the authors discuss an algorithm that extends the routing module in UFO (Unified Facilities Optimizer) to allow diverse routing in layers corresponding to optical fiber transmission. The algorithm considers the primary and protection routing problems simultaneously, thus ensuring that a diverse route can be found, if one exists. The current implementation of the UFO simply determines a primary route for each point-to-point pair.
