New adaptation layer protocols (AAL-CU) have been proposed to transport multiplexed voice sources over ATM cellular networks. This paper studies the applicability of these proposed AAL-CU protocols to carry multiplexed voice and compressed video traffic. A simulation package has been developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed Ericsson, IBM and TISI protocols. Results indicate that the AAL-CU protocols can be used efficiently to transport integrated voice and video traffic. The high efficiency of AAL-CU as compared to the standard AAL2 results from the concept of minicell multiplexing inside the ATM cell. Results also show that the proposed AAL-CU's have different link utilizations and different error handling capabilities.
