Throughput and one-way latency measurements in a 3G/4G live-network hi-mobility uplink
Theoretical values of throughput and latency parameters of 3G as well as 4G mobile networks are generally known from the standards. However, in praxis they depend on various aspects like radio signal coverage, number of connected users or moving speed of the terminal equipment. In this paper we present results of measurements conducted in Vienna, Austria. They were conducted for activities of AEROCEPTOR project funded by EU 7th Framework Program. An in-house developed tool called NetPerf as well as custom in-house designed hardware modules were used for one-way delay measurements and obtaining precise time from GPS source. The results can be potentially used for Unmanned Group Vehicles (UGV data link design. These UVG devices should support missions ranging from surveillance to detection of environmental pollution incidents, and including early identification and tracking of illegal activities like smuggling or trafficking.
