Although cronyism has been suggested as a leading cause of the two famous worldwide crises, it has received little attention from scholars. In this paper, we analyze the concept of cronyism and argue the forming mechanism from the perspective of social exchange theory. Results show that in-group favoritism and personal loyalty are the antecedents together with the leader-member exchange quality mediate the relationship between the above variables and cronyism. Management implications are discussed.
